Stud Poker generally
involves a combination of "Hold Cards" (cards dealt face
down to each player), and "Up Cards" (cards dealt to each
player face up, for all to see).
Betting includes an
ante to play, and is opened by rank at the beginning of each
round. Minimum bets may increase per round, as Dealer declares prior
to starting.
--Variations--
The following
variations mimic 7 Card Stud in that you
make your best 5-card poker hand from 7 cards. Winning hands will
be stronger with the introduction of wild cards. But remember: there
are no 6 or 7 of a kind. Poker is a 5-card game.
Here are a
few variations:
Follow
The Queen
7 Card stud
with wild cards. Remember this: Queens are wild. The next card to
be exposed following a Queen becomes wild. Hence the name.
The catch:
If a second Queen is exposed, the previous wild card is nullified,
or replaced by the next exposed card to follow the second Queen.
The same continues if a third Queen flops. If a Queen is the last
exposed card, Queens will be the only cards wild.
Lets play this
out with Gus and Phil. Same hand as before:

This hand is the
same as the example in 7 Card Stud. However, on the 2nd round,
Phil's Queen is wild, and your 8 is also wild as it follows
the Queen.
-
There's not much
left to say here. Gus folds a losing 2 pair hand since he can't
be the set You show on the board (Ace-8-8). The Queen gives
Phil 4 of a kind (9's), and You end up winning using your pair
of wild 8's to make a straight flush in clubs (7-wild-wild-10-J).
-
What do we learn?
No wilds = stay away.
Hands that
Work:
Good hands
to have usually involve having a Queen or the wild card that follows
the Queen in your hold cards. Wild cards in the hole always make
good opportunities.
When a Queen
doesn't flop on the table, only Queens are wild. That makes straights,
flushes and full houses possible winners. Consider your opponent's
hand strength with one wild card when evaluating your own hand.
Don't count
on the wild card that follows the Queen staying the same. A second
Queen can change everyone's hand dramatically.
