Stud Poker generally
involves a combination of "Hold Cards" (cards dealt face
down to each player), and "Up Cards" (cards dealt to each
player face up, for all to see).
Betting includes an
ante to play, and is opened by rank at the beginning of each round.
Minimum bets may increase per round, as Dealer declares prior to
starting.
Variations
of this game can add wild cards and other tweaks to spice the game
and perk up the quality of winning hands. They will be discussed
later.

Here's the run-down:
-
Gus opens with a
King high. Phil has a pair and raises. Who knows if you stay?
-
Gus's King high
leads the 2nd round. Phil raises and may just buy that pot.
-
Your pair of 8's
lead. Gus may fold, needing more than his pair of 6's to win
with one card left. Phil raises.
-
You lead the last
round. Gus made two pair, 6's and 4's, and might raise. Phil
sees that Gus is representing better than your 8's, and since
he barely beats the 8's, he'd fold. Ultimately, Gus's two pair
wins, if he stayed through the hand.
-
Of note: In games
where lower hands tend to win, it is important to bet when you
make a decent hand. Phil could have been better off betting
big early and winning the ante and Gus's lead, rather than investing
in a medium pair and losing at the river. "Always better
to win a little than lose because you let someone catch a hand."
Also, if you or Phil had folded before the river, Gus wouldn't
make his 2 pair and lose.
Winning Hands:
Well, you see most of
everyone's hand. A high pair can usually win. Two pair can only
be profitable if one pair is with your Hold card and the other pair
is low and can be beaten. Obviously, if your board pairs Aces, you
won't get many callers.
Straights, flushes,
and above will rarely play out or be called once the river shows.
This also makes them easy to buy or bluff.
