--My Final Answer--
Q: Why is the Ace of Spades different in each deck?
A: I can't illustrate this without getting copywrite permissions from
several manufacturers, so if you don't know what I'm answering here, take
a look at the Ace of Spades the next time you play cards.
As mentioned in my Face cards answer, all face cards are drawn with certain
characteristics in mind. The Ace of Spades, however, is drawn with details
unique to each deck manufacturer.
The fanciful design common to the Ace of Spades began in England, where
King James I passed a tax on the local manufacture of cards. As proof
of payment, the Ace of Spades was required to have an insignia unique
to that maker.
As a matter of fact, cards printed in the UK were liable for taxable
duty under this law until 1960!
The design on the Ace of Spades still holds its value as the distinguishing
characteristic in comparing decks from various manufacturers. Bicycle
playing cards licenses their Ace of Spades as a trademark for their deck.
Check it out next time you open a new deck.
