Poker Page: Games

Section 1: Rules/Rank (or click here to jump to games)

If you came here, you're probably looking to expand your knowledge for the game of poker. That's good! The next Saturday night in your friend's basement, you won't be the guy asking how to play every dealer's choice game.

For the true novices and those who simply aren't sure, Poker, by my definition, is any card game in which a player plays 5 cards which are ranked against opponents in a standard order. For you 3-card players, the standard order is different, and the game it typically called Monte, not poker. Of course, almost any card game that involves betting and hand rank is usually referred to as poker. Below are the hand ranks for Poker and Monte:

Poker Hand Rank (lowest to highest)

HAND
Example
Details
High Card
A-K-9-7-2
High card wins. Ties rank to next high card. Pot splits when all 5 tie.
Pair
A-A-K-9-2
Highest pair wins. Ties determined by remaining high cards.
2 Pair
A-A-4-4-K
Highest pair wins. Ties determined by 2nd pair, then by 5th card
3 of a Kind
5-5-5-A-7
Highest "Set" (3 of a Kind) wins. Ties determined by next high card
Straight
Q-J-10-9-8
Highest straight wins (example is Q high). Usually, A-2-3-4-5 is a 5 high
Flush
K-J-9-5-4, suited
Highest card in suit wins. Ties are determined by next highest in suit.
Full House
4-4-4-A-A
Highest "Set" wins. Ties determined by the rank of the remaining pair
4 of a Kind
Q-Q-Q-Q-3
Highest 4 of a Kind wins. Ties determined by the remaining card.
Straight Flush
7-6-5-4-3, suited
Highest card in Straight Flush wins. Ties split since all 5 cards play
Royal Flush
A-K-Q-J-10
Royal flush is an Ace high straight flush.. Ties split.
  • Wild cards can get messy, but when in play, 5 of a Kind beats the Royal. 6 of a Kind does not exist, as Poker only counts your best 5 cards.
